About

Welcome to the 1851 Champion’s Collective.

The 1851 Champions Collective was established to empower Catawba College student-athletes by helping them fully capitalize on their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. Our collective unites former Catawba athletes, dedicated alumni, committed advocates, and supportive local businesses, all focused on advancing the personal growth and professional success of our student-athletes.

We provide student-athletes with comprehensive resources, tailored guidance from industry experts, and a strong network designed to help them navigate the dynamic NIL landscape confidently. Our initiatives include educational workshops, personalized branding strategies, mentorship opportunities, and meaningful business partnerships. Through our collaborative approach emphasizing integrity and innovation, the 1851 Champions Collective aims to equip student-athletes with the tools needed to build successful, authentic brands and achieve sustained success both during and beyond their collegiate careers.

How We Support Student-Athletes

The 1851 Champions Collective’s primary purpose is to fund NIL opportunities for Catawba College student-athletes. With additional resources, we aim to expand our services to provide guidance and networking opportunities to help student-athletes navigate the complexities of NIL. This includes workshops on branding, social media strategy, and access to potential endorsement deals.

Success in the NIL Landscape: What It Takes

What is NIL?

NIL stands for “Name, Image, and Likeness.” It refers to the rights of college athletes to monetize their personal brand, allowing them to earn income from endorsements, social media, and other ventures.

What Are Examples of NIL Opportunities?

Student-athletes can engage in various NIL activities such as sponsored social media posts, appearance fees for events, signing autographs, product promotion, participating in promotional events, starting their own merchandise lines, and more. The Collective may also connect student-athletes directly to third-party businesses for promotional opportunities.

Who is Eligible?

All eligible student-athletes can participate in NIL activities, provided they comply with NCAA regulations and Catawba College’s policies regarding NIL. International student-athletes should be aware of specific restrictions related to their visa status. While the NCAA rules do not directly prohibit international athletes from receiving NIL compensation, U.S. Immigration Law may restrict certain forms of compensation for activities that occur in the U.S.

What Can Creating a Personal Brand for an Athlete Look Like?

Creating a strong personal brand is essential for student-athletes looking to maximize their NIL potential. We provide guidance on defining your identity, crafting a compelling story, utilizing social media effectively, creating quality content, engaging with the community, leveraging our resources, developing a monetization strategy, and monitoring and adapting your brand strategy.

Is 1851 Affiliated with Catawba College Athletics?

No – The 1851 Champions Collective is a third-party entity that is unaffiliated with Catawba College. It is also not affiliated with the Chiefs Club. The collective is an additional way to directly support the student-athletes at Catawba College.

Are There Any Restrictions on NIL Activities?

Yes, while student-athletes have the right to engage in NIL opportunities, they must adhere to NCAA and institutional policies. This may include restrictions on the types of endorsements and partnerships they can pursue. Any student-athlete must receive permission from Catawba College to use the college’s facilities, uniforms or logos for third party endorsements or contracts.

While specific endorsement or appearances are generally required for Collective initiated opportunities, the Collective may also consider other factors in awarding opportunities like student-athlete recognition for conference or national awards, character, service and academic achievements.
